The Mount Polley Mine Disaster: Root Causes and Reparative Futures Panel
March 17, 2025
2024 marked ten years since the Mount Polley Mine disaster, which spilled 25 million
cubic metres of mining waste filled with heavy metals into Te T7iweltk (Quesnel Lake). While
unique in scale, the disaster is part of a long history of social and ecological
devastation in British Columbia, dating back to the colony’s formation in 1858. BC Studies discussed this disaster in our special issue no. 221, Spring 2024.
Continuing on this discussion, we are excited to announce this upcoming panel building on our special issue!
This discussion builds on the BC Studies special issue Learning from Disaster: A
Decade After the Mount Polley Tailings Dam Failure. It brings together Secwepemc
leaders and researchers to discuss the disaster’s root causes and explores grounded
and practical future directions.
