Dr. James Wood – British Columbia and the Great War
November 17 2014 from 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM
VPL Central Branch, 350 West Georgia St.
Alice MacKay Room, Lower Level

At the outbreak of the First World War in 1914, British Columbians volunteered for overseas service with an enthusiasm difficult for modern society to comprehend. Every community in BC provided more than its quota for the first Canadian contingent to make its way across the Atlantic to the battlefields of the Western Front.Drawing from the first-hand accounts of British Columbian soldiers, this presentation will centre on the fears, bonds of friendship, and apprehension of impending battle that became the soldier’s experience of the Western Front.
Dr. James Wood is a Professor of History with research interests in Canadian history and war in the modern world.Presented in partnership with The Royal United Services Institute – Vancouver in commemoration of Canada’s First World War Centenary.
