MONUMENTS: PENDER STREET, DOWNTOWN EASTSIDE

MONUMENTS: PENDER STREET, DOWNTOWN EASTSIDE

Street Violence. If the viewer is familiar with Vancouver’s Chinatown, the image’s location is obvious. It’s the 100-block of East Pender Street home to Sai Woo and New Town Bakery (April 2017). The Sunday morning street is calm; however, it masks the violence that can be found in th neighbourhood of the Downtown Eastside. The scrawled words of brutality and misogyny jar one’s sensibility–if you choose to look.

The words haunt me. With the constant refrain of ‘fake news’ from south of the border, is this real?
