All of the articles in this issue are based on papers presented at the “B.C. Studies Conference” that was held at the University of Victoria in October 1979. With the exception of Maurice Careless, who teaches history at the University of Toronto, the authors are members of the Department of History at the University of British Columbia.
It is with considerable regret that the editors note the untimely death of Professor Leslie Upton shortly before this issue went to press.
